RIM customers to get access to ADSL at last

EXCLUSIVE | Under intense political pressure, Telstra will start using technology that will allow customers on integrated RIMs to get ADSL, Whirlpool has learned.

The new product, called "mini-CMUX", is an additional panel of cards that will be placed into the RIM cabinet, allowing up to 10% of customers on that RIM to get ADSL. This is comparable to regular telephone exchanges which are also enabled for up to 10% of customers to get ADSL.

Remote Integrated Multiplexer (RIM) technology allows Telstra to run fibre-optic cable to a location and then convert the fibre signal into traditional phone services. RIMs are significantly cheaper to install in remote locations where there is no existing copper infrastructure, such as new outer-suburban housing estates, outback bush and islands. However, until now they have prevented customers from getting ADSL.

Alcatel claims it has supplied the RIM equipment which is currently in use on over a million Telstra voice phone lines -- so the imminent deployment of mini-CMUX technology will be a welcome relief for a lot of people stuck on RIMs.

NO RELIEF IN SIGHT FOR PAIR GAIN CUSTOMERS

The mini-CMUX product will not help any customer on a 1+1 pair gain system (where one phone line has been digitally split in two).

However it is rumored that Telstra will soon start using improved 1+1 pair gain units that will provide 64k audio channels for each of the two phone lines running over one copper pair. The 1+1 pair gain units currently in use provide only 16k audio channels -- inadequate audio bandwidth for modems to connect at high speeds.

If that rumor is true, customers who get the newer pair gain units will at least be able to connect at higher analogue modem speeds, though they still would not be able to get ADSL.

Shadow Minister for Information Technology, Sen. Kate Lundy has been lobbying the Government and Telstra over the disadvantages of pair gain systems at her Pair Gain Victims website.
