I purchased one of these from overseas about 1 week ago, mine has run flawlessly without any bugs. I have added some pics. You can probably tell from the pics the phone is by no means small, I thought it would be smaller than it is, but it isn't in anyway unmanagable. Bigger phone means bigger screen, which is better for SCUMMVM :) (see pic 3)

Thats is the first thing i thought when i pulled it out.

It is a nice looking phone, but that QWERTY keyboard is useless unless you have tiny fingers (each side of the key is a different letter), the touchscreen works perfectly and the handwriting recognition is very good.

As for the lack of camera, i personally dont mind, I have a Digi SLR for that, albeit alot bigger than a phone.

Kind of....

Well not really, contacts can be synced. Export to VCards and then transfer to the phone, but as far as iSync is concerned, it doesnt work :( there are apparently some hacked files you can get for it, but I have had no success. Worst of all there is no Salling clicker support yet, I use that program all the time, but the good news is that they are already working on it :)

Calendars do not work at all from what I can see, I may need to try third party software but I do not hold out any hope at the moment.

Files transfer fine (hence being able to get SCUMMVM and games transfered from Mac to Phone)

I wish Apple would update iSync more often, it supports really old phones but not new ones, for a company that likes to "Think Different" this is unacceptable. Well IMO anyways.

Oh and all this has been done via bluetooth at the moment, there is an included USB cable that I havent tried out yet, hopefully it works (with no Kernel panics) and doesnt need software installed like the K750i did.

I'm really interested in this phone, its like the perfect size pda/phone with qwerty keys and without camera, I've been reading the other forums about this phone and heard all the praises. Then I take a look on ebay and they were selling for around $600-$650 with shipping. I hope this phone is out soon, with the price around those ebay seller. can't wait.

a question for those lucky ones that had these, how is the ring volume and speakerphone on these compared to the other SE phone or any other for that matter?

I hope it's as loud or louder than K608.

Seems to be a few companies focusing on this type of phone.

You have Sony M600i, Nokia E61 & Motorola Q. Of course, they are all targetting the Blackberry email everywhere market (and to a lesser extent the Palm Treo which has been successful in USA but not anywhere else)

Not sure why they are dropping cameras, I guess because Blackberry doesn't have one.

Had a feel of E61 but it is too wide compared to my Treo. Thickness is nice and would be great as a web browser but a bit too wide for daily 1-handed phone use.

Anybody know when Motorola Q will be out here?

The low-end Palm Nitro is due in October in US which means it will be last out here.

Cheers

I tend to agree, but someone has to be the guinea pig.

To be honest, getting the contacts to the phone is as simple as selecting all contacts in Address book and selecting "send to" and the appropriate phone. really easy!!

No calendar support sucks though.

I heard that iSync was being update and assumed this phone would be added to the supported list, got the phone a few days after the update came out only to find it wasn't :(

I really should be more patient with my purchases. Oh well it will be a kick ass phone when syncing is added (probably in 10.5, not good)

Found one reference to "mid July" but no more details or pricing.

If Helstra weren't so inefficient or difficult I would have had a SE W810i today - but two Helstra shops, plus a couple of other shops I couldn't find an unbranded one.

Am half tempted to at least look at the M600 still despite it not syncing.

I think nthan was just saying it won't sync with iCal yet. That's not a phone bug, it's just because iCal/iSync needs to be updated to recognise this phone.

The M600i will definitely sync your calendar with Outlook straight out of the box, or directly with an Exchange server.

After months of procrastination, I've finally narrowed my new phone purchase down to the Nokia E60 or the SE M600i. I think both phones are excellent and I've gotten over the whole mini expandable memory thing. Has anyone had an opportunity to use both, and if so, what are your thoughts? Thanks.

Edit: Here's a comparison of the two phones on GSM Arena...

The E61 screen is fantastic.
Interstingly, the E70 screen has a much higher resolution, yet the phone displays far less information on it than on the E61. Like in stand by you only have 5 icons, 6 on the E61.

Same when reading an email, the E61 shows two more lines. There are very few applications making use of the higher resolution and when they do (like the ssh client putty) it's so tiny, it's unreadable !

Anyone else have M600 through Vodafone?

So far it's a great phone, however I have three problems.

1 > The Activity menu shortcuts on the today screen seem to be missing, and I have no idea how to access them. All the manuals have them pictured, but I can't find anything? Maybe Vodafone has a variation of the UIQ?

2 > When I try to install language packs from Sony Ericsson site it says I need to first install SonyEricsson10274BEBLanguageID. No idea where to get this from.

3 > The browser seems to kernel panic (error "KERN" or somesuch) every time I try to acess the on-board application shop.

Any help?

also, is it easy to trigger the touch screen? As i keep phone in jeans pocket, don't want to keep triggering the phone. is there a screen lock function?

It's Vodafone branded to the max. Lots of red! I had a bit of a play with one in a vodafone store today. It seemed to run smoothy from the little time I spent on it! Ask a sales rep at a vodafone store to let you play with one if you're worried. The guy I was chatting to was more than helpful.

I also asked at an Optus store and the sales rep gave an ETA of the end of august for anyone who's waiting for this one on Optus. :)

Atom:

- windows mobile

- blouetooth
- no 3g
- wifi
- no keyboard
- price: last time i looked around $1000

M600i:

- symbian os
- touchscreen
- no camera
- bluetooth
- 3G
- no wifi
- keyboard
- price: vodafone have it for $700

a friend of mine has the atom, nice and small, but the os feels a bit sluggish. i never use the camera on my phone (got a decent camera for taking photos), but i want to be able to receive and write emails on the go. i've decided to wait for the m600i. played with a dummy in the vodafone store today. i really like the design, it's quite thin and i didn't mind the keyboard either.

I had 3 M600i's over a 10 day period and none of them would charge - they just slid overnight to zero and then the message "replace main battery" - and it was on the wall charger. Needless to say, i fnally gave up, Vodafone initially refused to refund my money (said it was company policy) but after a call to head office, they complied to my request.
I would love to know just how many units have failed.

$598/9 at Vodafone and 3...I believe!

Very tempting, but...a camera + Wifi? (or am I asking too much?)

As mentioned in an earlier post...3 has it for $22 per month starting on a $29 CAP (min. $20 per month) <<<<<seems pretty good $528 for phone over 2 years + call plan min. $20 = $480...I don't really worry about the call plan costs, as from this perspective you don't just buy a phone then don't make calls...so is it reasonable to say the only real cost is what you pay for the phone ie. $528?

Any hopes for an M600i + 3.2megapixel camera + 4gb + WiFi...finally a truly usable (good size) PDA/Phone/Digicam/multi-function device....is this what we may end up with down the track? Let's hope the track isn't too long ;)

Well the Nokia e61 has the Wifi and memory card support but no camera

The Samsung i320 has megapixel camera & memory card but no wifi. (Not available here but out in Europe, in Asia soon)

Both have better form factor and keyboards than M600, none have a touchscreen.

Palm, Vodafone & Microsoft launching new Treo gsm on Sept 12 in Europe with Wifi, 3G, megapixel camera, touchscreen, memory card support & WM5 for PPC. The only drawback is probable screen resolution of 240 x 240 and possibly Vodafone exclusive. And don't expect it to be cheap!

Whats the saying? Good, fast and cheap, choose any 2.

I am looking at getting my first 'organiser' style mobile, and have this one in mind.

Having never owned (or even seen) a mobile of this caliber, I'm very interested in what this Push Email concept is about.
My current understanding is that it will deliver your emails directly to the mobile without any user interaction.

But.... can this also be done over bluetooth? Since I spend most of my time either at work or at home where there is broadband, can email be pushed from my PC without having to rely on the phone provider?
Is it possible to push RSS feeds as well over bluetooth.

Also, is Push Email usually an additional cost like on a per Kb basis. There's no point in paying for it if you are near a www source.

Thanks.

The idea of getting it via PC & bluetooth sounds a bit strange. Guess you can sync your PC email program with your phone via bluetooth or cable but pretty poor solution.

Best to get a plan that includes data or get a data bundle to existing phone plan. Email specific plans from providers are usually expensive and best avoided unless someone else is picking up the bill.

Basic data bundle or capped plan is the way to go and retrieve email using your normal email provider via POP3, IMAP or web, most of the phones mentioned in this thread support all those methods.

I am not currently with 3, but one thing that does appeal with their packages, etc is the unlimited Email for $3 per month, which I am gathering allows just that...send and receive unlimited emails (using your 3 email address ie...or I wonder if this includes sending and receiving your other POP3 email accounts?) Pretty much all other networks (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone (I understand) charge you per kb...is this true?

Thinking of buying the M600i on the 3 $29 Cap plan for $22 per month ($528 still cheaper than $599 outright...not including calls, etc, but I never consider those a -ve as you always make calls anyway).

As for updating RSS feeds, email without your interaction (ie. they just get delivered), I think it would be best to have Wifi so when you are near a wifi connection (home or office, etc), it seemlessly connects and updates you inbox/feeds...am I pipe-dreaming?

gonna buy m600i as soon as ow have it. it says available 30th of August on their website. i'm with virgin at the moment, but they don't have any data plans (looks like they never will) , so thinking about switching providers. Vodafone have a databundle for $30 which gives you 100MB of data download, and i think three have similarly priced bundle. Pay-as-you go data services are WAY too expensive. 100MB a month should be enough for regular email checks, rss feeds and occasional web browsing.

Got mi m600i today. White. Looks great. Keyboard works fine, but touchscreen is sensitive to stylus and fingers, don't know if that will create problems down the track. Media playback is something out of this world. Better than any iPod. Got a 1GB card from JB HiFi for $99. Looks like it will not be hard to change faceplates later on, a thing that will add value and longevity to the phone, something I missed from my Nokia days. There was some talk someware that it is problematic scrolling to contacts, but using the keypad makes lite work of any contact list.

All up, exelent phone.

I gather with it being white, you bought from 3? I went into both Vodafone and 3, and Vodafone said 3 had white exclusively!?

Anyway, I have had a play with Vodafone one and was reasonably impressed...seems faster (and better) than Symbian in a Nokia. Also didn't seem to be much Vodafone branding.

I would be interested to know what it is like being (potentially) a 3 'branded' M600, since 3 didn't have any demo's on hand!

Cheers,

PS. If at 3, what did you go for? $20 per month on $29 CAP with $3 email?

AND...the 3 rep said the $3 'unlimited' email only included receiving, but you paid for each sent email...is this true, or did she NOT know what she was talking about?

LOL she didnt know what she was tallking abt. YOU can recieve unlimited emails from ur 3 email to ur phone for freee . But if u wanna send unlimited emails, sign up to the $3 email pack. Otherwise every email u sent will be charged at 20c per email sent.

Again .. receiving email is free with or without the unlimited $3 email pack

hope this helps

I thought that might be the case....cheers!

Also...is the 3 email service something you could rely on? Is it work diverting you other POP3 email accounts and just receiving and sending to and from the 3 email address on your phone?

I've had a bit of a chat around at various mobile stores, and it sounds as though the Vodafone and 3 m600i's software have been heavily customised (branded), and from what they were saying, it was for the worse.

Has anyone been able to compare a regular m600i with the Vodafone and 3 versions?

Also, does anyone know if Optus 'brand' their mobiles, or do they leave them as is? Personally, I would prefer to have a 'standard' mobile without the mobile company messing with it, even if it means not purchasing it through a service provider.

MI5: Yeah, 29 cap on 3. Was on a $44 plan up till now with a z1010. Got the $3 e-mail option, seems to be working fine. One quesiotn: does the $3 email include attachments? Or are they counted as download/upload?

Zen: How can I tell what firmware I am running? What benefit do you see with the new firmware?

primal LOGIC: There is actualy no branding on the phone other than the theme tat gives it away as a 3 phone. Change the theme, and no one knows. The k800i has a small panel under the screen with the 3 logo/watermark, probably the smalest branding I have seen to date, but the m600 just has m600 there.

Anyone have connection problems with the disk2phone software?

Got my m600i through Optus on the weekend, and as someone who hasn't owed a PDA or smartphone in the past, I can say that I am quite happy with it so far.
I was very happy to see that the software hasn't been customised other than Optus adding their own services settings and a very discreet 'Yes Optus' at the top of the main window.
The processing speed can be a little slow at times, but nothing that bothers me. And I can agree with everyone who said that video playback is awesome. What a great unit for watching a show while commuting.

Another quick question...currently I am with Telstra on a 2g sim card....can I use this in the m600i or do I have to get a 3g sim card?

If so do I just go to a Telstra shop and swap for one???

I can't go on a 3g network yet as I am still in a contract with Telstra.

Although I primarily use (work req'ment) a Windows notebook (USB cable) I have tested it via bluetooth on the Mac (OS X 10.4.7) and it finds it without any problems. By that I mean, it pairs and then asks if I want to sync with Address Book, etc. From that you might be able to presume it will sync....however, I have read somewhere maybe that iSync hasn't been updated to fully allow this. Nevertheless, Bluetooth File transfer works!

Picked mine up last week, 3 branded. A couple of issues:

- 3 maps the hardware button on the right side to Planet3, no way to change this as menu option is disabled... great idea on a business phone, 3!

- Firmware is still buggy, my phone sometimes will not ring or vibrate when an incomming call arrives (very annoying!) Have to remove battery each time to fix it.

- When using GPRS, I get a 'No calls allowed (GPRS)" message. There should be a setting somewhere to force GSM to drop GPRS connection when an incomming call arrives... no one seems to know where to find it though :)

Aditionally, 3 reps seem to have no idea at all how their Unlimited EMail package works, I can't get a straight answer on how exactly data is metered / charged. Ports 110/143 free to any IP? Only to planet3 email account? Who knows!

They also can't tell me if I'm 'allowed' to update the firmware myself without voiding support. Does anyone know if a firmware update will remove the dodgy 3 'features' such as disabled hardware button?

Other than those issues, it is a great phone. Hopefully future firmware updates will fix these issues!

Yes, that locking the hardware button to Planet 3 is a crock. Maybe 3 think that Planet 3 is the most important application for business people. Yeah right.

By the way, does anybody know what kind of tool pays $4 or whatever for a ringtone? I wouldn't pay 4c for one especially when you can find them on the net for free!

Been playing around with this phone all day and I love it!

The only problem is whenever I try to charge the phone while its off it hangs at the SE symbol. It does not go to the blank screen with the battery charging at the top corner. This requires the battery to be taken out to restart.

Funny thing is this problem goes away when I tried to update the firmware. The update software indicated that the phone was running the latest firmware and so I didn't proceed, and now it works! Now the infrared light is flashing like it suppose to :)

Some disappointments:
- Phone has to be on for alarm to work.
- No profiles
- No dedicated buttons to receive and end call...

but apart from that it's a good phone.

I've heard a few people bag the phone out, describing the keys as hard to because you have to press the correct side for the letter you want.

I thought the letters were like the multitap or T9 predictive input on a normal mobile, except because there were less letters on each button it was quicker or T9 was more accurate because there were fewer possibilities.

Anyone who's used the phone - are the keys like I thought for text input, or are they two directional rocker switches, where you push the left or right side of the button depending on which letter you want?

I'm seriously considering replacing my Jasjar with one of these babies. Sure I lose WiFi (which I rarely use) and the full VQA screen, but I've used QVGA on my XDA II and it's usable. I also lose nearly 170g in my pocket every day (the damn Jasjar is nearly 290g), which would be nice. The Exchange ActiveSync client and Certicom VPN client mean the M600 is potentially a really useful little business phone.
