This is one of the few phones that combine HSDPA and WIFI.. I want to use the phone as a modem to access 3's broadband and when in range of WIFI network, use VoIP.

Isn't N95 compact? Besides Samsung i600 (not Blackhack which is i607) has HSDPA and Wifi.

But my argument is that the N95 is not compact

Been testing with one today I can tell you it is thinner than the 6120, same width but about 15mm longer. I find the keypad a bit easier to use as the buttons are slightly bigger than the 6120

wouldn't be surprised if this becomes the top nokia seller on next g.
wi-fi makes it more useful than the 6120.
the n95 is way too much for most punters.
this happens to be a pretty good s60 handset

This phone looks lke exactly what I want. I was tempted to get the 6120c but liked the wifi in the e65. This phone combines the two.

How long would you think it would take for 3 to adopt this phone and what plan/repayment option would you predict?

With the aussie dollar doing well it is tempting to buy it from that site mentioned (If they shipped to AUS). :-)

Just got home from a not-so-wild night involving aforementioned mate. Saw it, handled it, kinda like a dark, slightly classier Symbian version of the 6234, so I'll be getting one.

He got it from a the "Telstra Life" (didn't even know that existed) store on George St Sydney.

There are definitely shop fronts that will sell imported handsets even after having been told that it MUST be Australian stock from Nokia.... it happened to me, but fortunately I knew what to look for. It WAS a shopfront, I was disgusted.

With regards to Wifi on the phone....

What third party software can be used to make/receive calls via voip?

Anyone had much use with voip on these types of phones.

Just trying to figure out if it is worth it - to make voip calls to family/friends here in oz and overseas....

Does anyone know if the E51 does video calls.

The salesman in the Tesltra business center said no, it does not have a front mount camera.

Telstra on-line says yes, but does show a front mounted camera in the pictures.

I was looking at the 6120 and then thought the E51 would be nice with WiFi but the had the salesman point out the draw back about video calls. Not sure it makes any difference but am interested to know if the salesman or Telstra online is correct.

Very happy with this phone as a replacement for a Samsung A701.

Three queries.
1. Has anyone had success initiating the VOIP features or have Telstra disabled this in the nextG version?

2. Is there any software that could provide the equivalent of access groups on some of the older e-series phones. At present I need to switch email access points (WLAN/HSDPA) via the menus - tedious.

3. Suggestions for a case welcome.

thanks

Bought the E51 today. And bell bugger me if it aint the best thing ive bought in years.

Where I could only get 1bar on the 701 ive got full strength on the E51. Great call quality. The Symbian OS just kills Windows mobile in my books.

And Voip on a mobile is such a cool concept when roaming about my house!

The E51 definately can do video calls however due to there being only one camera if you wish to to be in picutre u must turn the phone around, hence u cant see the other person. There is no front based camera.

Anyone know an easy way to sync Mac addressbook and phone numbers with the E51.

I compared an E51 with a 6120 on NextG in northern NSW in difficult reception areas. Both are similar for reception with the E51 having a slight edge. A T165 was marginally better than both. All phones handheld! The T165 doesn't feel like a "real" phone though.

Is an E51 Force cradle coming soon similar to the 6120 cradle. I've been told that the bluetooth cradles have problems if you take the phone out - the call still goes to the carkit. Is that correct?

Perhaps I don't understand the bluetook thing all that well.

How much is the BlueAnt Supertooth?

Does it provide an aerial connector?

Does it have a cradle?

If so, is the aerial permanently plugged into the cradle or do you have to plug in the aerial every time you insert the N95?

Does the Blue Ant charge the phone?

If the BlueAnt SuperTooth doesn't do any of the above is there any carkit solution for the N95 which includes a N95 compatible cradle?

Good question. I assume that there will be a cradle to suit this phone and then use it with the CK7W Nokia car kit - the kit on its own doesn't support an external antenna. You need to get a cradle to suit the handset. Anyone??

I picked up one today from my local Telstra shop (in Newcastle).

I love the size of the screen, the feel of the phone, the back cover, mostly everything.

Two disappointments - it doesn't look like the USB cable charges, and there's a bug in the Mail for Exchange application where it fails if a site requires HTTPS and the supplied certificate has multiple addresses.

I think Telstra have this exclusively at least for a while. It is actually branded on the back which is irritating. They don't show that in the product photos on the T website.

I really like it. The buttons are easy to use compared to the 6120 being a smidge longer and the thin profile is very nice. Functionality is really good.

Thanks for that eddie b. I thought that was the case because I went to optus and they didn't even know what phone I was talking about. Just hoping that someone may have had some inside info...

I've had the E51 now for a few weeks.

The Good
Familiar Nokia functionality and ease of use.
Synchronisation with Outlook is good.
Pleasantly surpised how good the Next G reception is in northern Vic.
Slim case means it sits in the shirt pocket comfortably but make sure the button's done up!
Battery life seems the best of any phone I've owned.
Keyboard is usable but only just; being a little bigger than the 6120 made all the difference to me.
Build quality is very good.
WiFi & BT setup was easy.

Not So
Font size and icons are a little small for me even using the largest font. This is really bugging me as I thought I'd be able to cope so now I'm reconsidering a N95 or Treo.
I love to get rid of the Telstra/Bigpond crap.
The charger plug size is smaller so none of my old Nokia chargers will work with it but I understand you can buy an adaptor.
Only the Turquoise colour scheme allows me enough contrast to read the screen. The others would work but the font size makes them unusable IMO.

Mobile World(?) in Melb seems to be the cheapest at $589. Compared to other Next G phones, especially the F165, its worth the extra money.

Cheers

Hiya,

Just recieved one.... As for SAP profiles, in the manual under 'bluetooth' it states the profiles supported, and yes SAP profiles are supported!

I'll post more once I've used it a little!

Cheers!

EDIT: And I've just put this to the test... a new SAP Bluetooth module for my S-Class... works perfectly... updates contacts each time it connects, all easily accessible from the COMAND system, very niiice!

One odd thing that's annoying me...

You can't set the contacts to SIM as a default... you have to go into contacts then go 'options-->Sim Contacts--->SIM directory. Which is a pain in the ass, if you want to use the SIM memory.

I know you can just copy them over, but every other phone I've had has enabled me to use SIM contacts as default!

Does anyone know how to get around this?

anyway to remove the telsra firmware/OS whatever it is. and revert it to the default one?

You will need to change the product code of the phone using NSS - Do a google search to find this - to a generic one - something like 0552362 would be good, then run the Nokia Software Updater it will pick up that there is no update but it will let you reinstall the firmware, do this and whoohooo no more Telstra branding.

Don't forget to backup your contacts first. :-)

If you choose to set up a mobile phone as a VOIP phone (a E51 in my case), is it correct that you can only phone other VOIP phones?

That seems to be what Nokia tech support have told me!

No it is not correct. You need a VSP [voice service provider] that offers calling off-net to PSTN and mobile though. A little more info. here:

moving from the 6120 thread (more appropriate here).

does anyone find the E51 a bit too long?
it is in between the 6120 and the old 6310i (which was a bit too long for my liking).

i know that it is often personal preference but some opinions on this would be appreciated. I tend to keep phones for a long time...

cheers,

Has anyone found a case for the E51? I found a "crystal clear case" on eBay, but the guys (staff) didn't like them - had no belt clip, and they're hard plastic rather than leather/vinyl. One has broken already. I've seen a couple of leather type cases, but they are the sort that you have to take the phone out of the case to answer a call, which is not real practical when it's a work phone that rings all day. Would a case from a different model fit, and if so, which one? We'd like to get the cases asap before the staff wreck the phones!

Here is s a setup guide that I made:

it should be equally useful with the E51

And NO, not all providers have monthly access fees.

Thanks for your feedback Andrew. I haven't got around to trying this out yet, but have started to get my head around it all. Good info on your website BTW. Thanks.

I can't say I have any issue with it at all. I haven't used the 6120, but the buttons are too small for my liking, whereas the E51 is easy peasy. I really like the feel of it - the battery cover is stainless steel...never seen that before. And it is made in Finland. Must be good:-)

Anyone know where this can be bought outright in Sydney apart from the Telstra shop at 400 George St?

Like the phone, and need to buy outright due to work contract (not with Telstra), but no-one apart from TLS seems to have it? Specifically looking for it without the Telstra and Bigpond 'programming'

It's been mentioned before that you can take the phone back to Nokia defaults and lose all the Telstra branding. See this link on page 5 forum-replies.cfm?t=824797&p=5#r97

Would prefer to get it from someone other than Telstra anyway

Have found a site in the Us that sells the E51 for $AU264.53 plus shipping.
Catch is you need to spend a minimum of $AU571.10 to complete a transaction.

Yeah, me too.
A friend of mine just bought an E51. Loves it.
I'm on CDMA and needing to migrate to NextG very soon. Hoping the price comes down after Christmas.
Need to buy outright and use prepaid as I work offshore for three or four weeks at a time.

how safe is this? my last phone (6230i) went through the wash and I had to use it for like 10 months without a 1,2,3, left, and left option button, ugh.

So I don't really want to brick my fancy new phone.

Another thing I've found with the contacts, is that you are unable to send text messages to SIM contacts either!!

This is a very odd lapse by Nokia, on what is otherwise IMO one of the best phones I've used.

Can anyone report on being able to overcome this?

Cheers!

You'll need a cover just for insulation.

Good question. I find it doesn't get hot unless it's charging and I speak on it for a few minutes. It doesn't get hot while just charging and it doesn't get hot while just speaking...weird.

damn it, I knew this would happen. my phone is stuffed.

used NSS and your suggested product code, all good so far.
updated using the nokia software updater, still good. t
hen went to restore my contacts, messages. etc phone restarts and now when it turns on, it comes up "Phone start-up failed. Contact the retailer"
anyone got any suggestions??

:-( sad face

EDIT: just turned it on while holding the green call, 3 and * buttons. Google tells me that this is a hardware reset, and now it's working fine so far. I'm going to restore just my contacts and messages. Hopefully, it'll be all good from now on. Fingers crossed

Nice tip, another one might be not to try to restore your contacts as it is likely to cause the same problem time and time again...

I think the problem was trying to restore everything, not just the contacts. As I did a whole phone backup.

You can buy an app on the phone that will magnify the font on a S60 3e phone...

>Installations>App. manager>Software Market>Personal Productivity>Psiloc Font Magnifier for Series60 3rd Edition (at the moment it's the first on the list)

It costs 10Euros, but if it does what you need it's probably worth it...

There's also another one available on the phone:

>Download>Nokia Software>Content Tools>ZOOM+ (about 6 down on the list)

That one's 25 Euro.... bit rich IMO! :)

I haven't seen any free ones anywhere, but there probably is...

Hope that helps a bit...

Has anyone here taken the horribly intrusive Telstra crap off? I'm not with Telstra, nor ever plan to be, but because I buy this phone from an authorised reseller I'm somehow obliged to take their crappy, bloated software with otherwise an excellent phone.

Has someone done this yet? If so, is it easy, does it void the warranty, and how do you go about it?

Any help will be treated like metaphysical frankenscence. I just hate Telstra's post-purchase marketing ethos.

The attached was found by a friend of mine and is FREE:)

"Have found and downloaded and am using Psiloc Font Magnifier for S60 3 (mobile optimised version).

got it from here: mosh.nokia.com/content/3...E040050AEE041611

It comes as a zip file. Extract to 'puter and open Nokia Application Installer, Function Bluetooth or whatever connection available and double click on Psiloc... size 552 kb. It will install automatically.
Find it in installations.

Currently set to 140% which clips the fonts a bit.

Seems to be free, says nothing about trial period etc."

Me again,

Free software usually worries me wrt viruses etc and unless Norton comes up with a Symbian version of its antivirus software, you're flying a little blind.

I used the Nokia apps installer to get it off my laptop using BT. I set mine on 120% and seems OK.

Now, to get rid of the Telstra crap and increase the size of the stand-by icons!

ok now for something different; does anyone know how to get the telsra stuff back on?

I've been having trouble with the menu not loading up and thought it was because of telstra's crap job at jamming their stuff in. but it's still doing it... so I want to put the telstra stuff back on and get it looked at.

I just purchased one of these slick looking phones today and I've been rather impressed with its features and the all-round Nokia ease of use.

However, I've been trying to increase the incoming ringing duration but for the life of me, I just can't see how to do it. It currently rings for 20 seconds then shows up as a missed call.

Anyone like to help a new E51 owner on his way, please?

I've found the following network command to work well on most phones:

**61*XXXX**tt#

Replace tt with a number in seconds. It's supposed to be a maximum of 25 (i.e. 25 seconds before diverting to number XXXX - use 101 for MessageBank). You can try higher, but I don't know if this will work.

Don't have an E51 - yet - so I can't help you out with a specifi
