I'm really p*(sed off that I can't disable roaming (dual mode) because Three in all their infinite wisdom disabled this option in their 'floppyware' (firmware).

What's the risks and disadvantages of debranding the phone. Voiding warranty? That alone is a substantial risk.

It does, however if you revert the Product code to the old one, if you need to take it in for repairs you can reverse the changes.

I love being able to pick UMTS only on my debranded N95 8GB, and GPS performance is much more responsive as well.

Just got my phone today from Optus on $49 cap. $149 upfront handset cost and no ongoing repayments :-) Already updated to v20 FW
Anyway, it's showing phone numbers for incoming SMS instead of my contacts name. I realise it's because of the +61 that's on the front of the number in the SMS but surely the phone is smart match that up in the contact list wit the non +61 version.
Never had this problem on my N70 I just upgraded from.

Do I have to go through every contact number and add the +61 ?

Thanks

dont see what the problem is if you can change it back when ever you need to. plus warranty is normally a hardware fault therfore software shouldnt be a issue

I just printed this photo that I took with my N95;
www.box.net/shared/ue19lazx9u

I printed it on a 6x4 inch matte at one of those digital photo kiosks, and I have to say, being a digital SLR user, I am completely IMPRESSED!! I don't think i'll underestimate the quality of the in built camera to use next time with decent lighting...

Not to mention, I took this pic when it was sundown, so I would've expected a very noisy/grainy picture, it's definitely decent for web viewing or 6x4's i think, i was expecting much worse from a phone camera.

Has anyone else tried printing 6x4's from any of thier N95 pics?

i find n95 has a ever so slight tinge of magenta.

Has anyone else tried printing 6x4's from any of thier N95 pics?

yeah i print them on my Canon MP830 and i have no problems. use the IPF8200 at work. 6x4 pics too small imo

Lucky i've just heard about this. Haven't upgraded as I like having my GPS track me in real-time.

So basically all it is now is a map viewer.

Debranding is simply changing a code that's stored on the phone. When you connect to Nokia Updater it checks the code on your phone, and allows you to download the appropriate firmware.

So really, it's about as dangerous as upgrading your firmware. Some people have hesitations doing this, and I think rrrohan's phone died midway through update because it ran out of battery. That said, the program tells you to plug in your charger before the update anyway.

If you need to return the phone at all for any reason, you can simply change the phone's product code back to it's original code, and if you really want, install the original firmware from the Nokia Updater again. The code's written just underneath the battery.

Just noticed your post mentioning the threat to 3 to debrand your phone for you... no chance. Three's 3G network is operated in conjunction with Telstra, so I'm pretty sure the option's disabled on their phones as part of their arrangements with Telstra. You're only costing yourself money while you haven't debranded. :P

I don't know what Three's problem is. So if I need to return the phone for warranty, which is only a year anyway right?, then it is a simple matter to rebrand the phone presuming it is still operational.

And it is a simple matter to do this?

I don't really need the Three Sync function anyway as I signed up for GooSync's service which so far I am extremely happy with. It allows syncing to multiple google calendars and backs up contacts over the air, to import to any platform. So if that's the only reason not to debrand then I'm all for it.

So... where do I start :-)

Sounds like the phone works better without all the Three junk anyway like the bookmarks that you can't delete that are always there to send you on your way to buy their stupid tones and wallpapers!

I have the same issue - is giving me the sh*ts.

I have deleted and reinstalled all map applications, even earlier versions, and they all get back to the same point....I have to upgrade to v1.3 (regardless whether v1.3 is installed or not). After the upgrade download - nothing, just back to the same problem.

apparently according to the nokia forum discussions.nokia.co.uk/...y.id=11623#M1451 it's firmware issue, there's a new firmware for the n95/n95-8gb, by upgrading the firmware the problem should go away... but where does that leave me? there's no new firmware for n82, plus no new firmware for branded nokias either

It can't be done with the software that comes with the phone.

Some enterprising programmer could probably write an app to do it since closing it is detected as a key press called 'SliderDown'.\

demothenes: best place to start would be the FAQ ;) I wrote a post a few months back that covers the basics. There are different product codes for colours but it's much of a muchness as far as I can tell.

Nokia determined that the sliding mechanism of the phone changes the screen from portrait to landscape (and vice-versa). The only exception is when answering a call.

It is quite possible that when on a phone call that you wish to use your phone in landscape mode - and not hang up the call. Therefore the N95 does not hang-up calls with the slider.

If you want to finish a phone call - press "end call". This may not suit everyone (especially those used to using the slider), but I personally prefer the option of my slider of changing the screen orientation rather than being my call controller. Again - personal preference here!

For those who have installed V20 firmware, and now cannot run maploader as it keeps stating that it needs upgrading - version 1.0 of map loader is the only one that works. There are lots of angry customers on the Nokia forums about this. It appears that there is a server conflict between the maploader and the new V20 firmware - so that you cannot download maps via PC!

Anyway, strangely V1.0 map loader software works (but not later versions). I managed to find an operating version (after deleting all other versions) and it does work www.driversdown.com/drivers/22742.shtml (use the US mirror). Refer to the discussions on the UK Nokia forums for the very angry customers - Nokia apparently is aware of the problem and is in the process of fixing this.

The only problem I have left is that I am able to download maps from all countries - except Australia and UK!! Anyone have any ideas?

Edit: Okay, I have researched this more, and there is a solution!!

(thanks to here discussions.nokia.co.uk/...&jump=true#M1579)

Plug your phone in mass storage mode or put your memory card in a reader. Delete the /cities directory and delete the /Private/20001f63 directory. Edit the "qf" file on the memory card so that only the first line remains (use a text editor like notepad).

Now Maploader V1.3 works.

The other option is to format your memory card - but I haven't tried this.

Damn that wasted a lot of time!!!

Not quite. The N95 seems to send 4 different keypress events from slider movements:

'SliderUp' - slider is extended to show the keypad
'SliderDown' - slider is closed to cover the keypad
'Device8' - slider is extended to show Multimedia keys
'Device9' - slider is closed to cover Multimedia keys

So Device8 changes the orientation of the device to landscape while 'SliderUp' changes the orientation to portrait.

Someone could surely write an app that listens for the 'SliderDown' event during calls and maps it to the 'No' (hang up) button. I don't program thou, I'm more into systems :P

doesn't work! maybe it'll work if u can copy someone else's qf file (someone who doesn't have nokia maps in the rom).. anyway... i'm suspecting that u need maploader v1.3 to download the latest maps (afterall nokia updates maps twice a year and they're due)

i'm wondering if i reset the phone clock.. will i be able to continue the trial after 3 days

Sounds like you have the number in there against 2 contacts, or the contacts are listed twice. Most of mine just say 04__ __ __ __ and it get the names when they call or sms. Like most phones (mobile & POTS) the N95 just looks at the last 8 digits anyhow.

Perhaps you have copies of your contacts or your SIM or Memory Card and in the device as well. (in which case it doesn't know which one's "name" to assign to the number).

try doing what p7e said.
it probably is the case that you have a double up of contacts somewhere.

I had this issue a little while back, and then my phone stopped telling me when I recieved new messages...
if this happens (or if you dont have a double up of contacts) try doing a hard factory reset, and see if that helps.

Three firmware sucks, I've decided to de-brand it because the inability to avoid Helstra insane roaming charges is terrorfying.

I have a few threads running on this topic over at

www.aussie3g.com/modules...e=viewforum&f=85

It seems that the main disadvantage to de-branding is that it will wipe all configuration settings and I will need to set up all access points, SyncML, etc?

What's been the experience with others with debranding a Three N95 to a generic say Euro firmware?

Not quite true, I debranded and upon booting the phone up, and attempting to use the web browser started "searching" for access points, I don't know if it downloaded them or they were saved on the sim card, but I didn't have to input any configuration at all.

And half the fun of debranding is going through all the settings again.

he upgraded the firmware without a charger plugged in and bricked it and now I guess it won't be replaced under warranty because it was de-branded and now now way to re-brand it for warranty purposes? Even so I thought there would be emergency firmware recovery tools?

So the only risk with de-branding is standard firmware upgrade risks? i.e. keep the charger plugged in.

I went ahead with the debranding and upgraded to the V20 firmware successfully. Skype still works, you can download that off Planet 3 > Mobile Apps.

Also, the 3Sync still works, you just need to input the settings which are found on the Three website.

At present, everything that I do with Three works and is even better than how it was.

Map files are located in Private/20001f63 on your memory card.

The Private directory isn't visible from your phone so you'll need to use a PC.

I don't see what the issue is though.. It's not stopping the maps app from working is it?

It doesn't mean that MapLoader didn't copy them across just because you can't find the map files. :P

Does anyone know where in Melbourne I could get an aircraft EMPOWER connector for my N95. I have the Nokia DC-4 car adaptor already for charging in vehicle, and you can get an adaptor that converts Boeing/Airbus power supply (15v 5amp) to auto (12v) like the ones at Laptopsforless but I can't find them in stores so far (tried Dick Smith and various travel goods stores). I don't need the Kerio/Kensington/Targus style $150 ones, just a simple $10 plug adaptor.... Need to walk into a store this week and get one, or I'd have ordered on line from the link above.

And before anyone says something about "why would you use your N95 on the plane", its in Flight Mode every trip, but the battery runs flat quickly when I listen to MP3s & watch movies on it during the flight ! Thanks in advance !

there is but only works somtimes depending mainly on how far along the flash it failed.

i think most reliable firmware update method is over serial port but even then a battery running out of jouice wont be good no matter how you upgrade firmware :S

Panoman has just come out:D w00t

If no one's ever used it, its a panorama photo taking program, i used to have it on my N70, and the old version used to only take really low res shots. The new version is by far better though, and lets you take full size panorama shots (well almost).

Here's a couple of shots i took this morning (mind my shaky hands a little:P):

Also here's a couple of screenies:

www.zyrorl.com/images/pa...reenshot0007.jpg
www.zyrorl.com/images/pa...reenshot0008.jpg

You can get it from www.panoman.net (no i'm not affiliated:P i just like the software:D)

Though i do have an N95 classic, and if you take shots at 1600x1200 (12x photos) you can run out of RAM pretty quickly, my suggestion is to remove your memory card (if its got lots of apps installed on it), and put your phone into offline mode, disable bluetooth, wlan scanning and gps to give it the most ram available... (stitching photography does take a lot of memory especially with photos that big.. just try it in photoshop and you'll know what i mean).

Panoman seems to be quite weird as to how many shots it seems to let you take. When you open the program, i think based on the actual scenery visible by the camera when the program is opened it lets you have more shots or less shots (really really weird behaviour). I open panoman indoors and it only lets me take 4 or 6 photos at 1600x1200, yet outside it lets me take 12... and you cant seem to be able to change this without closing/reopening the software..

Other than that weird quirk it seems to work perfectly.

I find that it also seems to correct your photos if you've screwed up a shot you can kind of rescan back over that pic and it'll fill in the black bit you missed:S. (it marks in black if you havent aligned your photo properly).

Have you updated to v20 firmware zyrorl? Curious to see if those memory issues are still happening to you with demand paging enabled.. I have difficulties getting it to run out of RAM these days.

Yeah the NSU does check the batt level. If the batt is too low it won't let you upgrade, unless you switch to mains power.

Have you tried downloading a fresh copy of devcertrequest.exe? try clearing your internet cache before trying to download again.

I had the same issue with another app I purchased. I sent an email to the developer asking what was going on, and their response was to format the memory card. This seemed really strange, so I backed-up the card and formatted - and as advised it worked (no more "file corrupted" when trying to install). Then it was a matter of copying back across the files that I needed to the clean memory card.

yes.... demand paging didnt help, considering its the foreground program... its going to get given the most it can use up...processing big images uses up a lot of ram.. pretty much fact of life:(

Woot, finally found an email address compatible with friggin' Symbian Signed....

Once I got that out of the way, the signing process was extremely simple. Although, it was a bit annoying because the guide I was following had the wrong instructions. Luckily it was pretty easy to figure out what to do even without a guide once you get to the signing stage.

Anyway, rotateme is a great app. Although I only bothered signing it because I wanted to be familiar with the process once Nokmote comes out, which is the app I'm really looking forward to.

Edit: And to those wondering whether they should try signing apps: if I can do it, you definitely can do it.

It's not nearly as difficult as some make it out to be. Although it can be a bit tedious finding the right email. <_<;

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but if anyone is looking for a good youtube player for the n95, check out emTube www.emtube.yoyo.pl. I have just installed it, and the playback is pretty good. Keep in mind its still in early development.

EDIT - Just tried emtube mood myself and definitely reckon its a good one. Unlike ytplayer, theres no limitations as far as I know.

Yes, I have tried YTPlayer. It's not as good as emTube. emTube has more options and is more stable with playback/audio sync from my experience. Plus you don't need to run it through Flash Lite 3.

Try using the zip file for the one off this site. www.n95users.com/forum/g...2.html#post42354

Its in the Guide To Obtaining A Symbian Developer Certificate & Signing N95 Applications part of the thread.

ill try but its just a link to the one on the symbian site so i think it will be the same

yeah still the same problem, when i try extract the zip file it just says it is an unknown format or corrupted. I have tried this on xp and vista, tried extracting with winrar and winzip, and even tried extracting it on my mac and then transferring it over... always comes up saying the file is unknown or corrupted.

Yeah, you have the option of saving the video to the phone or memory card after it has finished streaming. It saves as an FLV file. Quite a nifty program I must say :D

so emtube doesn't actually stream the video, but saves it to your handset and plays it back...

otherwise you couldn't save it.

That's pretty good... even youtube doesnt allow you to save.... (does it??)

Actually another great 'youtube' site is www.idesktop.tv, this is an awesome site if you want to search for clips, and then download to your N95 via PC. It can convert videos to quite a few different formats too...

Anyone know why i can't get a GPS lock on my N95 v12 firmware? I'm been trying for the past few days and nothing seems to work :(

All time the slider was open and the back of the phone is facing away from my body and hands. I've sat outside for a good 40mins with no lock and ive tried sitting it next to my window overnight and still no lock!

I had a look at satelite info and i see a series of numbers (2, 4, 8, 9 ,11) with square boxes next to them and it just sit there doing nothing....

Any other tips or ideas on what i can do before i give Nokia a call tomorrow afternoon?
